TARIKH KORULA FOUNDER & COACH

The best coaches do one thing most coaches don't even know is possible.

Smart money listens, challenges, and supports. It doesn't dictate. Great coaches aren't different. We listen deeply. We ask hard questions. We confront and push to unearth what's already inside and then hold founders accountable to their genius.

The best coaches do one thing most coaches don't even know is possible.
A cluster of stars and gas surrounding the Milky Way's supermassive black hole, known as Sagittarius A

Last week, astronomers used the Very Large Telescope to reveal a gas cloud orbiting the black hole at the center of our galaxy.

The telescope didn't create that cloud.

It revealed what was already hidden there.

That's the job.

Here's one of coaching's dirty secrets: most "coaches" are just former executives getting paid to give advice. Share war stories. Dispense playbooks. Play the all-knowing elder and stroke their egos. It's an unfortunate trap that too many coaches and clients fall into.

They're not entirely wrong to try. Real-world experience matters.

But you can't step in the same river twice. AI is dismantling engineering team structures that worked fine two years ago. No one, not the most decorated operator, not the most storied VC, has a playbook for what founders are navigating right now. Leaning on the past as a template in a landscape this dynamic isn't wisdom. It's a trap.

I spent a year getting trained and certified as a coach. Two more years mentoring under some of the best startup coaches on the planet at Reboot. What I learned, and still practice, rejects the advice-giving model entirely.

Here's what great coaches actually know:

Clients aren't broken. They don't need fixing. They're whole. They're wise.

The coach's job isn't to give clients wisdom. It's to reveal it.

The best investors understand something similar: founders know their markets better than the investors do. Smart money listens, challenges, and supports. It doesn't dictate. Great coaches aren't different. We listen deeply. We ask hard questions. We confront and push to unearth what's already inside and then hold founders accountable to their genius.

When founders operate from their own revealed truth, not a borrowed playbook, they do what no one has done before. That's where the magic lives. New products. New models. New markets. None of it comes from following someone else's template. You know this instinctively but you don't trust yourself.

Your breakthrough lives inside you. The best coaches help you find it.
